2026 Stanley Cup Final Preview

M1. Carolina Hurricanes vs. P1. Vegas Golden Knights
Carolina's Path: No team has gotten to the Stanley Cup Final in fewer games than the Hurricanes did this season. They needed 13 games over three rounds to reach the Stanley Cup Final. They swept both Ottawa and Philadelphia on the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. After dropping the first game, 6-2, to the Montreal Canadiens, the Canes won the next four contests to secure the Prince of Wales Trophy. Taylor Hall sits third in the league with 16 points, helping to drive a line with Jackson Blake (5-10-15) and Logan Stankoven (9-3-12) that has been the best in the league this postseason. Frederik Andersen has experienced a Renaissance, so to speak, going 12-1 with a 1.41 GAA and a .931 save percentage.
Vegas' Path: It might've taken Vegas a few more games than Carolina, but they've been just as impressive. They faced a tough test against Utah in the first round, trailing 2-1 in the series and 4-3 midway through the third period of Game 4, before winning three in a row. They finished the Ducks in six games as well. In the Western Conference Finals, they completely shut down the Presidents' Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche, sweeping their way into the Stanley Cup Final. Mitch Marner leads the league with 21 points, while Jack Eichel is second in points (18) with a league-leading 16 helpers. Brett Howden and Pavel Dorofeyev each have 10 goals each to lead all skaters this postseason.
Season Series: The Golden Knights won both meetings during the regular season, both coming eight days apart in October. They won 4-1 on home ice and 6-3 in Raleigh. Along with this being as long ago as it was, the Canes' roster was in shambles, devastated by injuries. Jaccob Slavin missed both games, Shayne Gostisbehere missed the first one and was hurt in the second, and K'Andre Miller, Eric Robinson, and William Carrier didn't play in Raleigh either. As a result, seven players (Barbashev, Eichel, Dorofeyev, Marner, Theodore, Hertl, and Karlsson) combined to record nine of Vegas' 10 goals and 22 of the team's 26 points. It should be noted that Mark Stone also missed both games.
Postseason History: This is the first time that the Hurricanes and the Golden Knights have met in the Stanley Cup Final. The Hurricanes are appearing for the third time in franchise history, including Hartford. They are 1-1 all-time, losing in five games to Detroit in 2002 and beating Edmonton in seven games for their only Stanley Cup in 2006. Vegas is also playing in its third Stanley Cup Final, reaching the end for the third time in its nine-year history. During their inaugural season in 2017-18, the Golden Knights lost in five games to Washington before reaching the pinnacle in 2023 with a five-game victory over Florida.
Prediction: Right now, I'm fighting two sides of myself. On one side, there's the Hurricanes fan in me that has watched the last three series and feels that this team can't be beaten four times in a seven-game series. Then, there's the more realistic hockey fan side of me that is legitimately worried about this Vegas team. Stylistically, the Golden Knights have the game plan in place to beat the Hurricanes. However, I thought the Canadiens had the same thing, especially after Game 1, but the Canes adjusted to that very well the rest of the way. Both teams are excellent at shot suppression, finishing 1st and 2nd during the regular season. The Canes took that a step further in the Eastern Conference Finals, allowing just 89 total shots in five games. Both Frederik Andersen and Carter Hart have put together two excellent series and one that was a little less stellar. This series could easily come down to special teams. Vegas' power play is incredible, and Carolina's penalty kill is tough to beat. The Hurricanes were my preseason pick to win the Stanley Cup, and while I fell away from that pick when the playoffs started, I have to stick with where my allegiances always lie. Give me Carolina doing it the same way they did it in 2006, winning Game 7 on home ice. Hurricanes in 7
