"Hall": 2025-26 Postseason Round 2, Game 2: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Philadelphia Flyers
It's Star Wars Day, though I'm not quite sure what that has to do with tonight's contest between the Canes and the Flyers. Carolina got off to another good start in Game 1, shutting out the Flyers 3-0 to draw first blood. With this shutout win, the Canes needed to make sure that the Flyers' force hadn't been awakened and that they were given a new hope. The Canes turned to the same group from Saturday's win to get them a 2-0 series lead, while the Flyers sought revenge to even the series and snatch home ice in their favor before heading home later this week.

My Thoughts
I'm noticing a trend for the Carolina Hurricanes this postseason. Against Ottawa, they earned a shutout win in Game 1 before winning Game 2 in overtime. Against Philadelphia, they earned a shutout win in Game 1 before winning Game 2 in overtime. Coincidence? I think not. The Canes probably weren't the better team for long stretches of this game, especially during the first period and overtime. It doesn't matter this time of year. The Canes capitalized on their chances, including a scramble in the net that ended up on Taylor Hall's stick and in the back of the net. The scoreboard reads 3-2 Carolina, and the series score reads 2-0 Carolina. Those are the only numbers that really matter.
The Flyers were ready to go tonight, and you knew that would be the case. A pair of goals in 39 seconds had the Lenovo Center very quiet. Slowly but surely, the Canes got back into the game. Their power play was abysmal for most of the night. However, they got on the board on their first chance in the first period. Jackson Blake stayed hot by sending a pass across the seam for Nikolaj Ehlers to hammer home for his first playoff goal as a Hurricane. Seth Jarvis finally had his voice heard in the third. Ehlers picked up another point by getting the puck for Jarvis to snap past Dan Vladar. It was a desperately needed goal for Jarvis, and it came at the perfect time. The winner came off Taylor Hall's stick. Blake made the key play to keep the puck alive in the crease, getting it to Hall as he put the rebound into the net. Blake and Hall finished with a pair of points, with K'Andre Miller, Jordan Staal, and Sean Walker adding assists, too.
Defensively, the Canes were anchored by another big night from their penalty kill. Philly scored on its first chance. They proceeded to go 0-for-6 for the rest of the night, combining for two shots on those chances. The Canes gave them very little to work with. Meanwhile, the Canes got the better chances while down a man. The kill has been phenomenal this postseason, allowing just two goals in six games. They've done themselves no favors by taking so many penalties, especially in high-leverage situations. Knowing your kill will be there to back you up is important. I would appreciate it if they chose to stay out of the box. Frederik Andersen was also outstanding tonight. He could've unraveled after allowing two goals on three shots. Instead, he stopped 33 straight shots, outdueling Vladar and his 40 saves to stay perfect.
I've noted the resemblance between this series and the Ottawa series already. The Senators put forth a massive fight in Game 2, only to fall in overtime. The Flyers were miles better tonight than they were on Saturday night. They gave the Hurricanes a ton of heavy (metaphorical) punches in this contest. However, they couldn't land the knockout blow. Now, they're in a 0-2 hole. By no means does it mean that this series is over. The Flyers are very much alive in this series, even down two games. Their crowd is going to be raucous for the next two games. The Canes will need to respond accordingly.
First Star of the Game: Taylor Hall
There are legitimate cases to make for Jackson Blake, Nikolaj Ehlers, Seth Jarvis, and Frederik Andersen. However, I'm going with the overtime hero. Taylor Hall scored the big goal late in overtime, but he made a huge block between the dots late in regulation to ensure that the Canes got to that point. It was a big time to pick up his ninth point of the playoffs, getting the initial chance before sticking with it and putting the winning goal into the net on the rebound.
Around the League
Buffalo-Montreal: The winner of the Canes-Flyers series will face one of two stellar teams in the Atlantic Division. This series won't get started until Wednesday night.
Next Up: The series makes its Philadelphia debut on Thursday night after two nights off. This should be enough time for both Alexander Nikishin and Owen Tippett to get healthy and challenge for a spot in Game 3. As of now, we're only guaranteed four games, with the fourth game coming on Saturday. If needed, Game 5 would be in Raleigh on Monday, Game 6 would be on Wednesday, and Game 7 would be next Saturday.
