Team of the Week- New York Rangers
After an inauspicious 3-2-0 start, the New York Rangers finally broke through with a perfect 3-0-0 week. They closed last week with a win over Seattle to begin a road trip, then rattled off wins in Canada against Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver. Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin led the team with five points. Igor Shesterkin won both of his starts while allowing four goals, while Jonathan Quick put together a 29-save shutout against the Canucks, his first as a Ranger. They sit atop the Metropolitan right now by one point over the Devils.
Disappointing Team of the Week- Calgary Flames
There's a problem in Alberta, and Sunday's Heritage Classic determined which team would be in this spot. With the Flames falling short, they finished the week 0-3-0. They only scored three goals in three games, getting shut out by Blue on home ice on Thursday. Only seven players recorded points, with MacKenzie Weegar being the only player to record multiple points. Jacob Markstrom didn't have a terrible week, but his underlying numbers suffered due to the lack of offense. Something needs to change quickly in Calgary before the rest of the division passes them.
Surprising Team of the Week- Anaheim Ducks
If Calgary doesn't get their stuff together, a team like Anaheim could look to replace them. The Ducks were on the road all week, beating Columbus and Boston in overtime before putting up seven goals against the Flyers on Saturday. Anaheim's 14 goals were tied for third-most this week, led by Frank Vatrano's four goals, three of which came in Saturday's win. Lukas Dostal picked up two wins, while John Gibson earned the third. The Ducks have improved to .500 at 4-4-0, with an opportunity to finish their road trip perfect against Pittsburgh on Monday.
Three Stars of the Week
3rd Star- Ryan Hartman (MIN)- 5 goals, 2 assists in 4 games
Hartman finishes second in the league in goals and tied for the second-most points after scoring goals in three of Minnesota's four games, including a hat trick during a five-point game on Tuesday. While the Wild didn't have a great week, Hartman was a true standout.
2nd Star- Jonas Johansson (TB)- 2-0-0, Back-to-back shutouts (55 saves)
After a slower start, Johansson is proving to be a solid starter for the Lightning. He pitched back-to-back shutouts against Carolina and San Jose this week. Tristan Jarry is the only other goalie in the league with multiple shutouts this season, which is exactly how we all expected it to be.
1st Star- Jack Hughes (NJ)- 1 goal, 7 assists in 4 games
Hughes started the week on fire, recording a four-assist game on Tuesday and a three-assist game on Wednesday. Adding another goal to round out the week, Hughes led the league with seven assists and eight points as the Devils put together a 3-1-0 week.
My Top 16 (* denotes a new entry)
16. Florida Panthers (4-3-0 overall, 2-0-0 last week) (+6)*
15. Montreal Canadiens (5-2-1 overall, 3-1-0 last week) (+10)*
14. Winnipeg Jets (4-3-1 overall, 2-0-1 last week) (+7)*
13. Tampa Bay Lightning (4-2-2 overall, 2-0-0 last week) (+7)*
12. Los Angeles Kings (4-2-2 overall, 2-0-1 last week) (+1)
11. Carolina Hurricanes (5-4-0 overall, 2-1-0 last week) (-3)
10. Detroit Red Wings (5-3-1 overall, 0-2-1 last week) (-4)
9. New York Islanders (4-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 last week) (+1)
8. Vancouver Canucks (5-2-1 overall, 2-0-1 last week) (+6)
7. Dallas Stars (4-1-1 overall, 1-1-0 last week) (-3)
6. Toronto Maple Leafs (5-2-1 overall, 2-0-1 last week) (+1)
5. New Jersey Devils (5-2-1 overall, 3-1-0 overall) (-)
4. Colorado Avalanche (6-2-0 overall, 1-2-0 last week) (-2)
3. New York Rangers (6-2-0 overall, 3-0-0 last week) (+6)
2. Boston Bruins (7-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 last week) (+1)
1. Vegas Golden Knights (8-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 last week) (-)
There isn't much movement at the top of the list. Vegas and Boston remain at the top as the only teams without a regulation loss. As my Team of the Week, the Rangers round out the podium by movinp six spots. Two losses moved Colorado down a few spots, but it wasn't bad enough to move them far down the board. Vancouver also moved up nine spots, while Tampa Bay, Winnipeg, Montreal, and Florida all jumped at least six spots to enter the Top 16. Carolina and Detroit took decent tumbles down the board, though the Hurricanes had a far better week than their movement indicates.
