College Football: Week 7 Review
Five Headlines of Week 7
- Hawkeyes Rolled Over- Unranked Purdue stuns #2 Iowa at home 24-7, forcing four interceptions and allowing just 271 yards of offense.
- Rebels Rule Rocky Top- #13 Ole Miss stops late comeback attempt from Tennessee in Knoxville with the end of the game delayed by unruly fans throwing things on the field.
- LSU Swamps the Gators- Baton Rouge was rocking as the unranked Tigers win a shootout against #20 Florida, 49-42.
- Cowboys Shoot Down the Longhorns- #12 Oklahoma State remains perfect, beating #25 Texas 32-24 in Austin.
- #1 Georgia Continues SEC Dominance- The Bulldogs win another SEC game against a ranked SEC team, beating #11 Kentucky 30-13.
College Gameday's Game of the Week- #1 Georgia 30, #11 Kentucky 13 (Athens, GA)
The Georgia defense had only allowed two defensive touchdowns going into this game. Kentucky managed to double that by scoring twice. That's about as good as it got for the Wildcats in Athens on Saturday. Georgia won their fourth game against a ranked opponent and their third straight against ranked SEC opponents. Georgia QB Stetson Bennett threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offensive charge, while the defense allowed just 243 yards, just 51 of which were on the ground. This wasn't nearly the dominant performance we'd seen from Georgia in wins over Arkansas and Auburn in the weeks prior. The Bulldogs are building a huge resume and are the team to beat in the SEC East. They're destined for a collision with Alabama in the SEC Championship Game in December. For Kentucky, the undefeated ride is over and it might be hard for them to win the division, but they still could challenge for a high-end bowl game and make some serious waves throughout the SEC.
My Game of the Week- LSU 49, #20 Florida 42 (Baton Rouge, LA)
This game was a blast to watch from beginning to end. It's safe to say the over was smashed for this one, with the two teams combining for 91 points. Each offense put up six touchdowns, but the biggest difference was the turnovers from the Florida quarterbacks. Both Richardson and Jones were given time under center and both of them threw two interceptions. One of Emory Jones' interceptions was returned for a touchdown and may have been the difference in the game. LSU running back Tyrion Davis-Price ran for 287 yards and three touchdowns while LSU quarterback Max Johnson threw for three touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner 3:30 left in the fourth quarter. LSU forcing four turnovers while not turning the ball over on offense was a major factor. It came down to the wire and seeing LSU get the win should instill some confidence for this team.
Teams of the Week
- Auburn- Bo Nix flushed the frustration of losing to Alabama last week and Auburn was able to win an SEC game on the road against a ranked Arkansas team.
- Purdue- In this week's biggest upset, Purdue was able to pick off Spencer Petras four times and pull off a major upset on the road against Iowa.
- LSU- Though it likely won't help with their hopes of competing for an SEC Championship, this is still a huge win for the Tigers.
- #1 Georgia- There doesn't feel like there's a team that can beat Georgia right now since they only allowed 46 total points through seven games and their offense has been almost unstoppable.
- #12 Oklahoma State- Despite Bijan Robinson's three touchdowns, the Cowboys completed the comeback in Austin to stay undefeated and keep pace with Oklahoma in the Big 12.
Most Disappointing Teams of the Week
- #2 Iowa- After the high of beating Penn State last week, this was a complete dud by the Hawkeyes offense and really hurt their chances in the Big Ten.
- #18 Arizona State- Just when the Sun Devils look to be for real, they lose a game like this and make us all question how good this team really is.
- #17 Arkansas- The Razorbacks were on a slide coming into this game and this felt very winnable, but they weren't able to contain the Auburn offense, and their slide moves to three.
- #19 BYU- Another team on the decline, the Cougars lost their second straight, granted this loss was to an overlooked Baylor team on the road.
- #20 Florida- The Gators really needed this win, but it's a perfect example of just how crazy their season has been when both quarterbacks turn the ball over twice.
