College Football: Week 5 Review

 Five Headlines of Week 5

  1. Dawgs Dominate the Hogs- #2 Georgia and their stellar defense pitch a shut-out in their top ten matchup with #8 Arkansas, 37-0.
  2. Tide Rolls over the Rebels- Led by Brian Robinson, Jr.'s 4 TDs, #1 Alabama, bully #12 Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa, 42-21.
  3. Cincy Makes a Major Statement- #7 Cincinnati makes the Group of 5 proud, take out #9 Notre Dame on the road.
  4. Down Go the Ducks- Stanford scores late after blowing a ten-point lead, stops #3 Oregon in OT to earn a major upset win, 31-24.
  5. An Evening of Upsets- Post 6pm kickoffs feature four unranked over ranked upsets with #10 Florida, #15 Texas A&M, #18 Fresno State, and #20 UCLA all falling.
College Gameday's Game of the Week- #2 Georgia 37, #8 Arkansas 0 (Athens, GA)
The appeal of having two top ten SEC teams go at it, especially with Arkansas coming off a win over Texas A&M last week, is certainly not lost on me. The game we got was a one-sided affair that showed that Georgia is the real deal. This was a masterful clinic by the Bulldogs, holding Arkansas's offense to 162 total yards, and never allowing them to get any momentum. Georgia's offense wasn't as powerful as usual, but it didn't need to be with their defense playing as well as they were. Was Arkansas really a top ten team? Probably not, but it's hard to ignore just how good they'd been playing so far this season, so a high-profile matchup was well deserved. They'll take a hit in the polls, but that shouldn't take away from their first four wins.

My Game of the Week- Stanford 31, #3 Oregon 24 (OT) (Stanford, CA)
This game had some major extremes. Stanford jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first half before Oregon stormed back with 17 straight to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, 24-17. The Ducks were in control and all they had to do was to hold onto the ball and make sure they left Stanford with a win on the road. With some mismanagement with the ball, Oregon was forced to give the ball back to Stanford with just under two minutes to play in the fourth at their own 13-yard line. Aided by a targeting penalty on Kayvon Thibodeaux that ejected him from the game, Stanford marched the ball into the red zone with a chance to tie it. They were given a second chance at tying the game with a holding penalty in the endzone that Stanford capitalized on to tie the game and force overtime. It only took one overtime for Stanford to pull off the upset, with the offense scoring in quick fashion and the defense holding Oregon out of the endzone at home. It's a major hit to the PAC-12's playoff chances with Oregon being in prime position, but there are still seven games to go.

Teams of the Week
  1. #7 Cincinnati- It might be the biggest win in the school's history, but it also snapped a major home winning stream for the Fighting Irish and makes their playoff chances even greater.
  2. #2 Georgia- The Bulldogs shut out the Razorbacks in convincing fashion and won the matchup of the weekend, making them look like major contenders.
  3. Stanford- The upset of the weekend is their second win over a top 25 team and their first win over a top three team in almost a decade.
  4. #5 Iowa- They did it a day early, but the Hawkeyes forced seven turnovers (6 INT and a fumble) in a dominating win over Maryland on the road Friday night.
  5. #14 Michigan- The Wolverines tore apart Wisconsin's defense and are now sitting at 5-0 and tied atop their division after many were skeptical of this team.
Most Disappointing Teams of the Week
  1. #10 Florida- The defense kept them in it, but the offense couldn't put points on the board despite 382 yards and they lost to Kentucky for their second loss.
  2. #3 Oregon- They had the game won and were in control until they mismanaged the ball late, took too many penalties to lead to a tie game, then they couldn't get the job done in overtime.
  3. #15 Texas A&M- Since Haynes King went down, this offense has lacked an identity and it showed with yet another loss, this time at the hands of Mississippi State.
  4. Syracuse- Not only were they the first team to lose to Florida State, but they also played from behind the entire game, just to come back and lose on a field goal as time expired.
  5. #12 Ole Miss- Granted it was to #1 Alabama, but the amount of trash being talked by Lane Kiffin, especially his pre-game interview on the broadcast, should've resulted in a better effort.
