College Gameday's Game of the Week- #10 Iowa 27, #9 Iowa St 17 (Ames, IA)
The rivalry between Iowa and Iowa St has been extremely one-sided lately. Iowa had won the last five meetings, including an 18-17 win in their last game in 2019. For the first time in the rivalry's history, both teams were ranked for the matchup with both teams inside the top ten. The game we got was low-scoring and felt far more lopsided than the score might indicate. Iowa's defense suffocated Brock Purdy (138 yards, 3 INT) and Brece Hall (69 yards, 1 TD, fumble lost) and made up for the lack of offense from their own team. Iowa St outgained Iowa by almost 150 yards, but it never felt that way. Purdy was pulled for Hunter Dekkers in the fourth quarter after Purdy's third interception and played really well (11/16, 114 yards, 1 TD). Iowa held onto the trophy for yet another year and it was well earned.
My Game of the Week- #12 Oregon 35, #3 Ohio St 28 (Columbus, OH)
This game was exciting from start to finish. This game featured so much firepower on both sides of the ball. There were over 1100 yards combined between the two teams and just one turnover. CJ Verdell scored each of the first three touchdowns for the Ducks (2 rushing, 1 receiving) and finished with 195 yards from scrimmage. CJ Stroud threw for 484 yards and three touchdowns with three receivers eclipsing 100 yards each. This all came down to Ohio St's inability to shut down Oregon's offense when they needed it the most and an unfortunate interception late from Stroud. The Ducks gave the PAC-12 a signature win on the road against a top five team in the country. They marched into Columbus and proved they are a legitimate threat on the west coast.
Teams of the Week
- #12 Oregon- Their offense was explosive and they provided the biggest win of the weekend by upsetting #3 Ohio St.
- #10 Iowa- Rivalry wins are always big, especially when they're in-state. The Cy-Hawk trophy is staying with the Hawkeyes for one more year.
- Arkansas- Beating a ranked team is always impressive, but this win felt like it had more behind it than just a non-conference upset.
- Michigan- The Wolverines might be for real this season and a win over a quality Washington team helped them crack a spot in the Top 25.
- BYU- A late-night win that might go under-reported, BYU upset the Utes on the back of Jeren Hall and his three touchdowns.
Most Disappointing Teams of the Week
- #9 Iowa St- Losing to a ranked team shouldn't mean much, but they really didn't come to play in one of their most important games on the schedule.
- Florida St- After hanging with Notre Dame last week, this was a total letdown for the Seminoles against an FCS team they should've handled.
- #14 USC- The Trojans got down big going into the fourth quarter and ultimately fell to Stanford and took a major hit in competing to win the PAC-12.
- #15 Texas- They're about to be an SEC team and this was absolutely embarrassing on the road against a team that is inferior to them.
- #5 Texas A&M- Just because you win doesn't make you immune from being among the most disappointing for the week and the Aggies only scored 10 points in a game against an unranked team.
